Umidon Black near Yeoksam Station
A Gangnam Korean beef omakase and Kanto-style sukiyaki lunch with my son

My son has been taking a little time at home lately, thinking through his next steps,
so I wanted to steal away for a quiet lunch where we could really talk.
We headed to Gangnam for a midday outing.
I wanted a break from the same old routine,
somewhere calm and polished where we could enjoy a great meal
and have a real conversation, without the over-the-top feel
or chaos of a huge, busy restaurant. I was looking for a place with a tidy, intimate atmosphere
where the focus stayed on the meal itself,
so I started searching for a cozy Yeoksam Station restaurant.
That’s when I found
Umidon Black, a premium Korean beef specialist.

Tucked into a side street near Yeoksam Station,
this place felt small in the best way—elegant,
refined, and full of character.
Instead of relying on a flashy exterior,
it was the kind of restaurant where you could feel the care
put into every detail of the space, and I loved that.
The counter-style bar seating is the centerpiece,
so you can watch the chef cook right in front of you
while enjoying beautifully presented dishes.
It has the feel of a premium Gangnam Korean beef omakase spot.

The Kanto-style sukiyaki lunch set we had with my son

Since we came at lunchtime,
we ordered the restaurant’s signature Kanto-style sukiyaki lunch set.
Even before we started eating, the spread of banchan and main ingredients stood out.
Alongside beautifully fresh, ruby-red Korean beef,
there was a platter of vegetables so pristine
they looked fresh from the market that morning.

Kanto-style sukiyaki is served in a shallow, gently simmering house broth,
where fresh Korean beef, vegetables, mushrooms, and tofu
cook together slowly
as the flavors build. Since ingredient quality
makes or breaks this dish, what Umidon Black served
really impressed me. The vegetables looked
as if they’d just been picked, with vivid color and real freshness.
Enoki mushrooms, shiitake, napa cabbage, green onion, crown daisy, and more
came together generously in the pot
and created a deep, flavorful vegetable broth.

Once the beef and vegetables were perfectly cooked,
I dipped them in the sauce and took a bite.
That classic sweet-savory sukiyaki flavor
, layered with the restaurant’s special tare sauce and the clean, mellow depth of doenjang,
melted together beautifully on the palate.
My son took one bite
and immediately said, “The beef is incredibly tender, and the vegetables still taste so vibrant.”
He couldn’t stop raving about it.
A perfect pairing with rich, savory doenjang for a complete meal

After the sukiyaki, the finishing meal
was just as memorable.
The doenjang-jjigae, a hearty Korean soybean paste stew served with the meal,
was especially smart because it balanced out
the richness of the sukiyaki so well.

Sukiyaki broth can sometimes leave behind
a lingering sweet-salty richness,
but the deep, savory doenjang here cleared the palate perfectly.
Its toasty, comforting flavor with rice
felt incredibly satisfying, and the progression from fresh vegetables
to Korean beef
to doenjang made the whole course feel beautifully complete.

It was one of those meals where
a full bowl of rice disappeared before I even realized it.
As we slowly enjoyed the meal together,
we were able to talk honestly about the things that had been on his mind lately
and about his plans for the future.
Because the restaurant was quiet and never overwhelming,
we could focus on the food,
but also fully sink into that time together—
exactly what makes this such a standout Yeoksam Station restaurant.

This visit to Umidon Black
felt like much more than just lunch.
It was one of those small, happy moments

came together perfectly.
